In this section we are looking at the shot count within a trailer - this is to see what works really well and what pace is included. The way we do this is by counting all of the shots and then dividing the length of the film by these shots to get an overall on how long the shot is still within the trailer.
Jigsaw is following up from the series of films Saw, within jigsaw bodies are turning up all over the city, each having an unexplained gruesome death and only pointing to one man; John Kramer. This trailer is 142 seconds long with a counting of 133 different shots which equalises to each shot having 1.06 seconds within the trailer. Whilst watching the trailer, everything is fast paced which means you have a short amount of time to see what is actually going on to guess what the plot is about - for us as a group the trailer was too fast to take everything in however it did leave you wanting to know more which means you need to go to the cinema to find out.
The snowman is very much alike to jigsaw where people are killed through an undescribed death however this has a plot where Harry Hole a detective is on a case to find out how a woman within the city is killed - her pink scarf is then found on a mysterious looking snowman with the writing 'hello mister police' on the snow. This trailer is 141 seconds long with the first half starting off slow and then speeding up with the shots - overall there was 98 shots in the trailer which we calculated meant 1.4 seconds for each shot. We believed this to of worked out well as we knew the plot and was able to take in each action whilst also wanting to know more.
Other aspects which need to be taken into account when creating a trailer is the diegetic and non-diegetic sound. We do this by calculating how many shots were diegetic and how many were not.
When observing 'The Boy' trailer as a group we split into two and one counted the non-diegetic sound and the other counted the diegetic sound. In total there was 100 shots within a 2:30 minute trailer meaning each scene got a total of 1.5 seconds. When watching the trailer we found that The Boy had 75 non-diegetic shots and 25 diegetic shots meaning it had more scenes of basic footage within the film over people sharing dialogue. The idea of non-diegetic sound over diegetic allows the trailer to be more affective as it isn't given too much away - enough for people to want and go to watch the film within the cinema.
Within lights out it uses an unbalanced amount of non-diegetic and diegetic dialogue. It had 82 scenes which had non-diegetic dialogue and 15 scenes with diegetic dialogue. We found that within this sort of trailer the non-diegetic sound worked really well due to the scenes within the trailer - not much dialogue was needed in order to make people want to go watch it. Due to the trailer being 2:15 minutes long and having 97 shots in total this meant each shot was shown for 1.4 seconds each time which worked out really effective.
In Ouija 2 trailer there was again an unbalanced amount of non-diegetic sound to diegetic however this worked really well due to the content of the actual trailer itself. Ouija is about a little girl who is possessed through the use of an ouija board - this trailer is 3 minutes long with a total of 84 non-diegetic shots and 27 diegetic shots meaning a total of 111. Therefore each shot had the time scale of 1.6 seconds in order to create the right affect for its viewers.
Location is important when creating the right imagine for the trailer, within the next few trailers we will examine how the atmosphere of the location chosen works well with the genre and plot.
